Meditation Psalm 93

The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty;
    the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength;
    indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.
Your throne was established long ago;
    you are from all eternity.

The seas have lifted up, Lord,
    the seas have lifted up their voice;
    the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
    mightier than the breakers of the sea –
    the Lord on high is mighty.

Your statutes, Lord, stand firm;
    holiness adorns your house
    for endless days.

(Ps. 93:1-5 NIV)

Before the Throne of God above

This begins a group of Psalms (93-100) which speak of the reign of the heavenly King who is greater than any earthly king. The kingship of God is from eternity.

Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns.

(Rev. 19:6 NIV)

The robes the Lord wears are a symbol of His glory, and to be armed with strength proclaims the power of Almighty God. The Lord is King of creation because He created all things. No one built a throne for God. He has reigned from all eternity and His throne is an eternal throne. The world has been established by God and it remains secure under His hand. Nations boast of what they are capable of doing to the earth. The earth has been established by the Lord and the security of the earth is guarded by God. We only have to reflect upon the worldwide upheaval that a microscopic virus has created to realise how little control we humans have. The nations may rage against the Lord, but the Lord remains upon His throne.

There was a great fear of the sea in the Psalmist’s time. Great evil and many mythical monsters were thought to live in the sea. It was considered wild and untameable. The seas may rage and roar, their waves may pound the rocks, but mightier than the breakers of the sea is the Lord who reigns on high. The Lord God is mighty and even the wind and waves obey Him.

As the earth stands firm and the throne of God has been eternally established, so the commandments of the Lord stand firm. The Lord’s commandments are holy and God’s word gives liberty to His people. Holiness adorns the house of the Lord. This too is established and will last for endless days.

Lord God, it comforts us that You are in control of all things. Nations will crumble at Your word. World leaders will be replaced as You decide. All things in the world and in the church are under Your command. We thank You that You control our lives, our health, the days of our life. Lord reign in us and glorify You Son through us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
