Fellowship focus 2 - March 1997
Updates...
Meeting point is an English conversation class. It started with the aims of building bridges into the wider community and thus encouraging others to think about the gospel.
Last year when we started, we only had one student, though others had shown interest. But now, after advertising more widely (and a lot of praying!), we are getting between 4 and 6.
The class meets on Tuesdays between 10 and 11.30am in the main church hall. Sitting around a heater, we enjoy a cup of tea together. Then we laugh a lot and practice English (through the medium of games, role-play, etc.).
Pray that God may use this for his glory.
Margaret.
It's not hard to guess which day of the week Friday Club's on, its name pretty much gives it away! Every Friday evening during school term time a number of children come along for a bible story and games or craft activities.
There are generally about a dozen boys and five or six girls at Friday Club, but there could be up to 20 boys and 11 girls. The age range of those who attend has extended in both directions from the advertised '8 to 13', and is more like 6 to 16. Most of the children have no other connections with gospel-believing churches.
The club officially starts at half past six, but the children usually start arriving at any time after six o'clock. The boys use this time to get in as much football playing as possible, but this does not hold any interest for most of the girls, who prefer to play their own games or talk together. Shortly after six thirty, the children are gathered together for the talk, which lasts for about twenty to twenty-five minutes. This term we have been looking at the lives of Elijah and Elisha. The talks are taken by Norman, Chris, Anita and myself, which works out at about two or three each per term.
After the talk, those children who don't want to play football are taken through to the kitchen or back room for some craft activities or different games. These are supervised by another of our helpers - either Anita, Caroline or Grace. The boys definitely enjoy their football, and we are sometimes invited to play against teams from other churches in the area - with varying degrees of success!
Please pray that the children will listen attentively to the bible stories each week, and that their lives will be changed for the better. Of course the best change anyone can seek, for themselves or others is salvation in Christ.
Martin Biddiscombe.
